How Much Does an Online Store Cost in 2026? Pricing, Platforms and Real Costs

An online store with us starts at 2,900 €, but that number alone doesn't tell you much until you know what's inside it and what pushes it up. Here's the real reason one webshop costs 2,900 € and another costs a lot more, Shopify vs custom, and the biggest misconception about monthly fees.

"How much does a webshop cost?" has a clear answer with us, but the number alone doesn't tell you enough. A 2,900 € webshop and a 6,000 € webshop can look similar at a glance, and the gap between them is huge. This article breaks down what actually determines the price, why we don't build from templates, when you don't need a full webshop at all, and the biggest misconception about monthly platform fees.

Why it starts at 2,900 €

The starting price is higher than a regular website for one simple reason: we don't ship templates. Every webshop we build is custom designed, thought through and built for conversion, not to just "look like a webshop."

That means a design that's actually yours, a catalogue structure that fits your products, and a checkout flow that's tested and tuned, not pulled off a shelf.

There's one exception. If a client finds a ready-made template they genuinely like and it's exactly what they want, we can build on it. In that case the price comes down, since we skip the custom design phase. That's the client's choice, not our default offer.

What pushes the price above 2,900 €

The price climbs on genuinely large projects: huge product counts, complex catalogue structures, or integrations that require extra development work. A concrete example from our own work: an age-gate for tobacco, alcohol or energy drinks, driven by newer Croatian regulation that requires it for certain product categories. That's not something that comes "out of the box" on Shopify or anywhere else. It has to be built and tested specifically.

Other common reasons a project costs more:

    • A catalogue with thousands of products and complex variants (size, colour, material)
    • ERP or warehouse system integrations
    • Multi-language and multi-currency selling
    • Advanced booking or reservation systems built into the store
    • Custom functionality Shopify doesn't offer out of the box

Do you actually need a webshop?

This is a question we should ask clients more often than we do. If you're selling a single product, you don't need a full webshop with a catalogue, filters and inventory management. A simple page with a Stripe integration for payment is enough.

That solution is cheaper than the webshop price you see above, but honestly, we wouldn't even call that a "webshop." It's a landing page with the ability to take payment, and that's a perfectly fine solution for the right situation. We don't sell you a bigger package than you need.

    Shopify or a custom platform?

For larger projects, Shopify is our main platform. It has a clean UI, it's stable, and at any point you can ask its own assistant for help with settings. For specific cases we also build custom solutions, depending on what the project actually requires.

Why we don't build webshops on WooCommerce

This is a personal stance, and we say so openly. WordPress and WooCommerce, if not maintained carefully, can become a real problem because of plugins that open security gaps for attackers. We don't like how that works, and we don't want to expose clients to that risk, especially on a webshop that handles payments and customer data.

For someone else, WooCommerce is a perfectly legitimate choice, and we respect that. Our decision is simply not to offer it, because navigating the WordPress plugin ecosystem turns into a job of its own, and we'd rather put that effort into the actual store.

How long does building a webshop take

Realistically, with fast client feedback (materials, images, approvals arriving on time), most webshops are done within a month. What actually eats the time isn't the big pieces, it's the small details.

Since we don't build from templates, every element has to work exactly as intended. That's part of why we choose the custom route: the result is a webshop that genuinely looks and works the way it should, not a compromise that "gets by."

    StageTime
Smaller webshop (single category, up to a few dozen products)closer to the 3-week floor
Larger webshop (advanced integrations, big catalogue)up to 6 weeks
Key speed factorhow fast the client responds

Payment gateways: Shopify Payments or CorvusPay?

If Shopify is your platform, the answer is simple: Shopify Payments. There's no need to bring in CorvusPay or a similar external processor, especially given their customer support, which in practice can be slow and frustrating to deal with. Shopify Payments is simpler, faster to set up, and honestly probably the cheapest option you have.

For single-product pages that don't need a full webshop, Stripe is the simplest solution.

The biggest misconception about webshop pricing

What clients most often don't grasp at first is the platform's own monthly fee, separate from our build price and our own yearly maintenance. Shopify has its own payment plans, and that's a reasonable cost for what you get: security, stability and peace of mind that everything works.

That monthly fee, roughly 20 € a month depending on the Shopify plan you pick, usually pays for itself with a single sale. We're not building stores for products with razor-thin margins. When you're selling a product with a real margin, that monthly fee is pocket change compared to how far a properly set up webshop can scale your business.

That's usually where people pause: "wait, I have to pay X a month just to run this?" But once you compare that number against what a webshop actually enables long term, the gap is negligible.

    What's included at 2,900 €

    • Webshop on Shopify or a custom platform, depending on the need
    • Unlimited pages, advanced custom design system
    • Product catalogue with categories and filters
    • Cart and secure checkout with payment and shipping integration
    • Multi-language support (hreflang, translations, localisation)
    • Advanced integrations (CRM, ERP, booking, payment processors) as needed
    • Technical SEO and AI search optimisation with structured product data
    • First year of hosting and maintenance included
    • Unlimited small revisions during development

From year two onward, our webshop maintenance starts at 300 € a year, more than a regular website (200 €/yr). The reason is simple: every webshop is different, so the exact price is scoped to the catalogue size and integrations, not a fixed number that fits everyone. That does not include Shopify's own monthly plan, which is a separate cost the client pays directly to Shopify.

    FAQ: webshop pricing

How much does it cost to build a webshop in Croatia? With us, a webshop starts at 2,900 €. The price grows with product count, catalogue complexity and special integrations like an age-gate or an ERP connection.

Is Shopify more expensive than WooCommerce? The initial build can be similar or lower on WooCommerce, but Shopify removes the risks tied to plugins and the security updates WooCommerce demands. We deliberately choose Shopify or custom solutions over WooCommerce for the stores we build.

Do I need a webshop if I only sell one product? Not necessarily. For a single product, a simple page with a Stripe integration is enough, which is a cheaper solution than a full webshop with a catalogue and inventory management.

How long does building a webshop take? With fast client feedback, usually 3 to 6 weeks, depending on catalogue size and the number of integrations.

What's the monthly cost after the webshop launches? Separate from our yearly maintenance (from 300 €, scoped to the webshop), Shopify charges its own plan, roughly 20 € a month depending on the tier you pick. That cost typically pays for itself with a single sale.

Why don't you build webshops on WordPress or WooCommerce? Because of the security risk that comes with the plugin ecosystem when it isn't maintained carefully. That's our own deliberate choice, not a claim that WooCommerce is a bad option for everyone.

    Conclusion

A 2,900 € webshop price isn't an arbitrary number. It's a custom-built store, no templates, with real attention to every detail that affects whether a visitor actually buys. The price climbs when a project genuinely calls for it: a large catalogue, special integrations, or regulatory requirements like an age-gate.

If you're selling a single product, you probably don't need a full webshop at all. And if you're building a real online store, the platform's monthly cost is negligible compared to how far that webshop can take your business once it's set up properly.
